The local picture

What the spreadsheet problem looks like in Houston.

Houston's spreadsheet problems tend to be volume problems with a field-data twist. Production reports, daily drilling reports, AFE tracking and vendor invoices arrive from operators, contractors and service companies in whatever format each one uses, and someone in the back office normalises them by hand. The numbers matter — an AFE overrun caught two weeks late is a real cost — but the process that produces them is often the least engineered thing in an otherwise highly engineered business.

What we get hired for here

The recurring Houston engagement.

Energy clients usually come to us with an AFE or cost-tracking workbook that has been extended year after year until nobody wants to touch it. The underlying need is simple: committed versus actual versus budget, by well or by project, updated often enough to act on. Getting there means dealing with messy vendor invoice data, inconsistent cost coding and the reality that field data arrives late. We build for the mess rather than assuming it away — late and partial data is the normal case, not the exception.

01

AFE overruns spotted too late

Committed-versus-actual tracking that includes open POs and accrued field costs, so an overrun surfaces while there is still time to respond.

02

Vendor invoice data in a dozen formats

A normalisation layer with cost-code mapping that the accounting team maintains, replacing per-vendor manual reformatting.

03

Field reports that arrive late and partial

Reporting that handles incomplete periods honestly — showing what is missing rather than treating a gap as a zero.

WHAT YOU END UP WITHA committed-versus-actual AFE or project cost tracker, a vendor data normalisation layer, or a field reporting rollup that handles late data honestly.

Typical source data for Houston clients: SAP or Oracle cost exports, WellView or OpenWells daily reports, vendor invoice PDFs and CSVs, field ticket logs, and the AFE master someone maintains in a shared workbook.

An illustrative scenario

An AFE tracker that only found overruns after close

A composite example built to show method, not a specific client engagement. No client is identified and no outcome is guaranteed.

  1. 01

Actuals came from the ERP monthly. By the time an overrun appeared in the report, the money was long spent.

  2. 02

We add committed cost — open purchase orders and field tickets not yet invoiced — as a first-class column rather than a footnote.

  3. 03

Cost-code mapping moves into a table the accounting team owns, so a new vendor or code does not require a formula change.

  4. 04

A weekly exception view lists only AFEs trending past a threshold. The monthly report still exists; it just is not the first time anyone hears bad news.

Working together across time zones

How the Central Time (CT) difference actually plays out.

CT is 10.5 to 11.5 hours behind IST. We keep 8:00–10:30 CT free for live calls, and work completed overnight our time is usually ready before your morning stand-up.

For a first conversation, the most useful thing to send is how cost data reaches you today, how late it is, and the last overrun you found after the fact. You do not need a requirements document, and if the file is sensitive a screen recording works just as well.

01

Send it over

The workbook, or a description of what is slow.

02

Questions

Hiring an Excel expert in Houston.

Answers written for this city, including the ones that might cost us the job.

Ask us something else
Is there an Excel expert near me in Houston who can come to the office?

Not from us — we work remotely from India and have no Houston presence. For the cost tracking and reporting work most energy clients hire us for, that has not been a barrier: the files move over email or SharePoint and the calls happen on Teams. If you need someone in the Energy Corridor in person, hire locally.

Can you handle daily drilling report data?

Yes. The usual work is building an import layer that copes with each operator's export format and produces one consistent dataset, then reporting on top of that. The import layer is where the actual difficulty lives.

Our cost data is three weeks behind. Is a dashboard even useful?

A dashboard on three-week-old data is worse than useless because it looks current. The more valuable project is usually adding committed cost and accruals so you have a defensible estimate of where you stand today, with the uncertainty shown rather than hidden.

Do you work with SAP exports?

Regularly. We do not connect directly to SAP — we work from the extracts your team can already pull, which avoids a systems integration project for what is usually a reporting problem.

Can you build well economics models?

We build the workbook mechanics — structure, scenario handling, sensitivity tables, checks. We are not reservoir engineers, so the engineering assumptions need to come from your team. We are clear about where our competence ends.

Local or remote

When a Houston hire beats us.

There are good reasons to hire someone in Houston, and we would rather set them out than pretend otherwise.

Hire locally in Houston when

  • Same working day

If a file breaks at 10am and must work by 2pm, somebody in your time zone will usually beat somebody in ours. Our overnight turnaround is an advantage for planned work and a disadvantage for emergencies.

  • Someone can be in the room

For a workshop, a training session, or a discovery process across several departments, physical presence genuinely helps. We work well over a call, but we will not pretend it is identical.

  • Procurement is simpler

A local entity, local invoicing, local contract law. For some organisations — public sector especially — that is not negotiable, and no amount of rate advantage changes it.

Remote usually wins on

  • The rate difference is large

A local contractor in a major city typically charges several times a remote specialist's hourly rate for output a reviewer could not tell apart. That difference is the whole reason remote delivery exists.

  • You may not meet the builder

At a consultancy the person who sells the work and the person who writes it are often different people. Here they are the same person, and you have their name.

  • Depth versus proximity

One local generalist covers whatever they happen to know. A small specialist team covers modelling, VBA, BI and Sheets properly. Which matters more depends entirely on what your file needs.
