The local picture

What the spreadsheet problem looks like in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has an unusually high share of businesses that run on project accounting: a production, a campaign, a season, a drop. The spreadsheet problem that follows is specific. You are not tracking a steady monthly P&L, you are tracking dozens of overlapping cost centres that start and end at different times, each with its own budget and its own definition of done. Standard accounting exports do not answer "how is this one doing" without a lot of manual reshaping.

What we get hired for here

The recurring Los Angeles engagement.

The DTC and agency teams we work with in LA usually arrive with the same symptom: a channel spend sheet that someone rebuilds every Monday from Meta, Google, Shopify and Amazon exports. It takes three hours, it is error-prone, and by the time it is finished the numbers are already a day old. The fix is rarely a fancier dashboard. It is a stable import layer that handles each platform's export format, a mapping table the marketing team can maintain themselves, and a blended-margin calculation everyone has agreed on in advance.

01

Weekly rebuilds from platform exports

Turn the Monday morning copy-paste ritual into a refresh: import layer per platform, one mapping table, one output the team already trusts.

02

Project and production budgets

Track many overlapping cost centres with different start dates against budget, with committed-versus-actual visible before overspend, not after.

03

Blended margin nobody agrees on

Pin down one definition of contribution margin across channels, including returns, fees and shipping, so marketing and finance stop arguing about which number is right.

WHAT YOU END UP WITHA refreshable channel or production dashboard, a margin model with one agreed definition, or an import layer that survives the platforms changing their export format.

Typical source data for Los Angeles clients: Shopify and Amazon Seller Central exports, Meta and Google Ads reports, 3PL shipment files, QuickBooks or Xero, and production budget templates in whatever form the line producer keeps them.

An illustrative scenario

A DTC brand's Monday-morning spend sheet

A composite example built to show method, not a specific client engagement. No client is identified and no outcome is guaranteed.

  1. 01

Four platform exports arriving in four different shapes, reconciled by hand into a channel view every week.

  2. 02

We build one import tab per platform that tolerates column drift — platforms change their export headers without warning, and a rigid formula breaks.

  3. 03

A single SKU-to-category mapping table replaces the lookup logic scattered across twelve formulas. Marketing owns and updates it.

  4. 04

Contribution margin gets one agreed definition, documented in the file, with returns and fulfilment cost included. The rebuild becomes a paste-and-refresh.

Working together across time zones

How the Pacific Time (PT) difference actually plays out.

PT is 12.5 to 13.5 hours behind IST. We keep a standing window from 8:00 to 11:00 PT for calls, which is late evening our time, and most written work lands in your inbox before you start.

For a first conversation, the most useful thing to send is which exports you rebuild by hand each week, how long it takes, and the number two teams currently disagree about. You do not need a requirements document, and if the file is sensitive a screen recording works just as well.

Questions

Hiring an Excel expert in Los Angeles.

Answers written for this city, including the ones that might cost us the job.

Ask us something else
Are there Excel experts near me in Los Angeles, or is this remote?

This is remote work and we would rather be clear about it than let you find out later. We have no LA office and no staff in California. What we do have is the same work delivered over screen share at a fraction of a local agency's rate. If you specifically need someone to sit with your team in Culver City, hire locally — we will not pretend otherwise to win the job.

Can you connect Shopify and Meta data without an API build?

Usually yes. Most teams already export CSVs on a schedule, and a well-built import layer in Excel or Google Sheets handles those reliably. We only recommend a proper API connection when the export volume or refresh frequency makes manual downloads genuinely painful — and then we tell you what it will cost to maintain.

Our spend sheet breaks whenever a platform changes its export. Can that be fixed?

It can be made much more resilient. We match columns by header name rather than position, add a check that reports which expected fields are missing, and fail visibly instead of quietly returning wrong numbers. Platforms will still change things; the file will just tell you when they have.

Do you work with production accountants on film and TV budgets?

We have built cost-tracking and committed-spend workbooks for project-based teams, including production. We are not a replacement for production accounting software like Movie Magic, and if that is what you actually need we will say so.

What is the smallest project you will take on?

A single-workbook review or one focused automation. Plenty of our LA work starts as a two-day fix on one broken report and grows from there — that is a perfectly good way to find out whether you want to work with us.

Local or remote

When a Los Angeles hire beats us.

Hiring locally in Los Angeles buys you some things we cannot offer. It is worth being clear about which.

Hire locally in Los Angeles when

  • Same working day

If a file breaks at 10am and must work by 2pm, somebody in your time zone will usually beat somebody in ours. Our overnight turnaround is an advantage for planned work and a disadvantage for emergencies.

  • Someone can be in the room

For a workshop, a training session, or a discovery process across several departments, physical presence genuinely helps. We work well over a call, but we will not pretend it is identical.

  • Procurement is simpler

A local entity, local invoicing, local contract law. For some organisations — public sector especially — that is not negotiable, and no amount of rate advantage changes it.

Remote usually wins on

  • The rate difference is large

A local contractor in a major city typically charges several times a remote specialist's hourly rate for output a reviewer could not tell apart. That difference is the whole reason remote delivery exists.

  • You may not meet the builder

At a consultancy the person who sells the work and the person who writes it are often different people. Here they are the same person, and you have their name.

  • Depth versus proximity

One local generalist covers whatever they happen to know. A small specialist team covers modelling, VBA, BI and Sheets properly. Which matters more depends entirely on what your file needs.
